# references/ — what the templates should look like

Each folder is one **reference set**: a kind of video a template is meant to replicate.
A template opts in through `templates/<T>/meta.json` → `"references": "<set>"`, and
`evaluate.mjs` then shows the judge that set's `sheet.jpg` and `brief.md` next to the
template's own frames and scores a MATCH term (rubric.md). Sets are curated by a
human; the autoresearch agent reads them and never edits them.

```
references/<set>/
  brief.md      the target, in plain words: genre, type, motion language, rhythm, palette, what NOT to copy
  refs.json     one entry per reference: id, title, source URL, author, license, license URL, date, credit line
  sheets/       6-frame contact sheet per reference (scripts/ref-sheet.sh)
  sheet.jpg     all sheets stacked; the only image the judge sees (scripts/ref-sheet.sh combine <set>)
```

Changing a set's `sheet.jpg` or `brief.md` changes the METRIC for every template using it:
re-run each one's baseline before comparing (results.tsv records `references` per row).

## Sourcing rules (ethical by construction)

Only add a reference whose license allows us to keep a copy and learn from it, and record it in `refs.json`
before adding its sheet. In order of preference:

| Source | License | How to add |
|---|---|---|
| HyperFrames registry (`npx hyperframes catalog`) | Apache-2.0 | `scripts/ref-sheet.sh registry <set> <item>` |
| GSAP demos: the official GreenSock CodePen collections | GSAP standard license (free since 2025) | Recreate the pen as a scratch composition, then `registry`-style snapshot it, or screen-record it and use `video` |
| Public CodePens | MIT (CodePen default for public pens) | Same; keep the author and pen URL in refs.json |
| LottieFiles free animations | Lottie Simple License (commercial OK, no credit needed, no standalone redistribution) | Download the MP4 → `scripts/ref-sheet.sh video <set> clip.mp4 <id>` |
| Pixabay / Pexels / Mixkit-Free / Coverr clips | Their content licenses (commercial OK, no credit needed) | Same as Lottie |

**Never:**
- ripped posts or reels from creators (even "for reference");
- TikTok/IG trending audio;
- footage, voices or likenesses of real people (motivational speakers especially);
- logos or trademarks;
- anything whose license page you didn't read.

References show the *language* to learn. The templates must not copy their words, layouts or assets.

## Sets

| Set | Used by | Status |
|---|---|---|
| `dark-kinetic` | hook-bold | registry references |
| `cinematic-quote` | quote-card | registry references |
| `_template` | — | copy it to describe a new kind of video |
